I'm surprised at the amount of teenagers on oppo. Just to let yall know, in about 6 weeks, I will travel to somewhere in the US to pick up my first car, and I will get my license and turn 16 in June. Im not sure about the particular car, nor the make, model or year, but I am firm on the category. Excited? You bet I am! I have been looking through used car listings for a year , considering just about everything, but now time is running out. The category will be a surprise, too. Hint: Domestic
Not much help from this article, I'm just puttin it out there that I will get my first car soon.

No more than $30,000. Most of my considerations are around $24,000-$31,000, but negotiating will take a few thousand off. I plan on driving it about 5,000 miles/year, so fuel economy is somewhat flexible.
![]() 02/13/2015 at 21:29 |

$30,000 for a car that a 16 year old will drive 5,000 miles/year. I'm not going to say anything, but if I were you I'd spend at least $10k of that budget on a flamesuit just in case.

No more than $30,000

oh man with that budget if you aren't rolling in an E46 M3 you're doing being a teenager wrong.

:O
Spend like $10,000 or less. That's waaaaaayyyyyyy too much for a first car.

No more than $30,000
DAMN, DAWG! That ain't shit! I'd flip a fuckin' table if my parents gave me that budget! Like.....you can't even get a new Cadillac for that! How do they expect you to be stuntin' on that cheap ass budget?!
![]() 02/13/2015 at 21:36 |

don't get me wrong if I was in your shoes I wouldn't be turning down the opportunity, to me it's funny because when I got my first car three years ago the total of my families cars was about $12,000 and there were 4 of them.

Speaking from the perspective of a 17 year old auto enthusiast, don't feel obliged to spend all your budget whatsoever. There's always plenty of time to have a fast car later in life. No shame in buying something you are proud to say you own, but there is much shame in spending your whole budget on something that supersedes your skill level and leaves you in a ditch in the first week.
Here's my first car. Fun to drive, not ruinously expensive, plenty fast for what I use it for, a great learning experience.

*cough* SPORTWAGEN TDI *cough*
Seriously though, it's the car I learned to drive on... we got it 4 days before I turned 14 and I'm now almost 18... and it has survived with no damage... from me anyways >:( screw high school parking lots
That... and the car is nearing 85 k miles! Of which I've put roughly 80% of those on the car by myself ;)
Just ask me if you have questions!

Bought her last may when I was 16. I have no regrets.
$24000 for a GT Premium 6spd with 28k miles
My wish list in order was:
2011 Ford Mustang GT (which I got obviously)
E46 M3
Pontiac G8 GT
Infiniti G37S Coupe
E39 M5 (this low due to repair costs)

A list of most cars I consider now, or have considered in the past...*puts on $10,000 flamesuit*
2009-2011 Challenger R/T
2011-2013 Charger R/T
2011-2013 Camaro Convertible SS
2003-2010 Jaguar XK
1963-1973 Buick Riviera
1965-1968 Mustang
1968-1969 Camaro
1998-2002 Trans Am
Jaguar F-Type Coupe R that was on Autotrader for $4,875...needless to say, price was increased about 20fold in a couple hours
1977-1979 Trans Am
C3, C5, C6 Corvette
2008-2010 Audi S5
2010 Cadillac CTS-V
2009-2010 Infiniti G37
2006-2009 Cadillac XLR
1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
2010-2014 Mustang GT Convertible

![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:21 |

personally I would avoid anything too old because they will be less safe and more likely to go wrong. You seem to be into RWD coupes so I would have fun test driving for a while until you find something you really like.

2009-2011 Challenger R/T
Heavy, bad on gas, the fatty of the bunch
2011-2013 Charger R/T
Eh, not bad, but the first gen looked better IMHO. I'd go for a first gen SRT8 or Magnum
2011-2013 Camaro Convertible SS
Pretty good car, but I wouldn't go for the Vert
2003-2010 Jaguar XK
Get the 2007+ model if you're serious about this, but expect repair bills to exceed the price of the car within 4 years.
1963-1973 Buick Riviera
Not terribly practical, but gorgeous
1965-1968 Mustang
Overall good choice. Get a fastback if possible. Very good parts availability, but might be hard to find a really well sorted example
1968-1969 Camaro
See: Mustang
1998-2002 Trans Am
Not what I'd get within the price range, but a very good car over all. 6 speeds have really low (high?) 5-6 gearing, so great highway mileage
Jaguar F-Type Coupe R that was on Autotrader for $4,875...needless to say, price was increased about 20fold in a couple hours
Fake/wrong
1977-1979 Trans Am
Ask Bandit
C3, C5, C6 Corvette
No C3, but C5Z and C6 are both good choices. Might not be too well received at 16.
2008-2010 Audi S5
Haven't seen prices on these lately, but might be hard to find a good example within the price range
2010 Cadillac CTS-V
Yes
2009-2010 Infiniti G37
A good car over all, but just not special
2006-2009 Cadillac XLR
Not as good as a C6
1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII
Really? Really?
2010-2014 Mustang GT Convertible
Again, would go for a coupe
![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:28 |

It's all about value for performance
However, one guy at my school did beat me on that sort of. He bought a 2006 SL600 for mid 20s I believe
Faster than mine? Yes
But he's owned it for 2 months now and has already been in the shop 3 times for not-so-cheap repairs. He knows nothing about cars and didn't know it would be unreliable _
![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:31 |

![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:37 |

Get something unreliable and cool from Carmax.
![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:37 |
|
That was my biggest problem with the G37
It just wasn't special and different enough
However an S with the optional spoiler (not that chrome stupid thing) looks very nice
I cannot agree with you more on the coupe. DON'T GO CONVERTIBLE. It's just not worth it
Also, NO 2 SEATERS. Why? You'll want to take out friends in your car. You know you will. And only being able to take out one at a time really sucks
![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:48 |
|
You have a $30k budget. Why buy one car?
I'm not even joking a little bit here when I say- BUY CADILLAC'S ENTIRE 2003 LINE UP.
Think about it- for ~$30k you could have
-first gen CTS
-2nd gen Escalade
-final gen Eldorado
-northstar Seville STS
-and a night vision equipped DTS.
And, above all else, you can claim to own an entire goddamn MODEL YEAR of Cadillacs. Get your driveway lookin' like a goddamn dealership.
Again I'm totally serious here. That's what I'd do with $30k........
......maybe there's a reason nobody gives me $30k
![]() 02/13/2015 at 22:54 |
|
Yep. All 2 seaters are now off my list. Plus, I have to drive home in that one car with both of my parents
However I have to agree to disagree about the convertible vs coupe.

Please ignore people telling you that you are spending too much for a teen, or that you are spending it wrong. Your finances are between you, your parents, and whoever else you personally involve. While there are certain cars that may be an unsafe idea due to performance/lack of safety features, I believe that nobody else has any business deciding what is "too much" for someone to spend on a 16 year old. Buy whatever you want and they approve of.

I think it's crazy to have a $30k budget for a 16 year old getting their first car. That said though as long as it's withing your parents budget and they trust your decisions then I'd go with a GTO an spend the rest on mods. Get the one with the 6.0L so that's '05-'06. I'm hoping to get one by years end. Whatever you do just be safe please and don't do dumb races just for YouTube views.
![]() 02/13/2015 at 23:58 |

ok- top trumps time!
What's your cars.....

......length?
......width?
......seating capacity?
.....engine size?
....power?
![]() 02/14/2015 at 00:20 |

I see where you are going with this. If you say so...
GC: 5.7 inches
Length: 203.3 inches
Width: 74 inches
Seats five w/belts
4.2 40 valves V8
310 horsepower, 302 pound/feet of torque.
![]() 02/14/2015 at 01:32 |
|
I got....
5.3in
207.2in
74.5in
Seats 6 w/belts
4.6L (woohoo!) 32 valve (damnit) V8
.......and.....uuuuhhhh......the power rating was inconclusive.
BUT MY CAR IS BIGGER AND LOWER AND SEATS MORE THEREFORE IT LUXURIES HARDER.
![]() 02/14/2015 at 04:46 |
|
Safe for it's time perhaps, but thy means pretty much nothing today. If you want a classic I'd split your budget and get something boring/safe/reliable for long road trips and bad weather (easily had for $8-10k) and then spend the rest on the classic so you can really treat it right. Also better for preserving the car since, as a 16 year old, you will make mistakes.
![]() 02/14/2015 at 04:55 |
|
C3 Corvette is junk. If I had your budget and wasn't going to drive that much (5k/year is like nothing) I'd go for a C4, 300zX, or 944.

2. If that's true, than an NYC subway is the most luxurious form of transportation in existence. How about another round if you're trying to prove a point?

My turn: Do you have, one your car or as an option:
Five speeds
Gear selection
All-wheel drive
Twelve Cylinders
Highway range?
Heated steering wheel
# of "ways" the driver's seat is adjustable
Heated cupholders
Open/close all windows w/ lock/unlock button on key
Stereo (specs?)
Sunroof
HIDs
A phone
Parking sensors

Five speeds-no
Gear selection-yes
All-wheel drive-no
Twelve Cylinders-no, but the car comes from the company that brought the world the V16, and that should be worth "heritage points" alone
Highway range? 496.5mi
Heated steering wheel- available
# of "ways" the driver's seat is adjustable- 10, with available 12 way
Heated cupholders-nah but I don't want my slurpee melting anyway
Open/close all windows w/ lock/unlock button on key- nah.
Stereo (specs?)- Bose 10 speaker. Has subwoofer(s?) and tweeters
Sunroof- available, one of the biggest in class
HIDs-mine doesnt, but I think it was available, and I'm getting those streetglow hyperwhites because fuck everyone who isn't me on the road
A phone-yes.
Parking sensors-available

mine isn't a landau top though.
Landaus are b pillar-back and canvas or cloth. Mine is a faux elk leather '74 fleetwood talisman inspired top.
So take off 10 points.
